VARIATION

CHOCOLATE CHIP BARS: Add 2 tablespoons milk or water to the butter mixture when creaming, then mix as for cookies. Spread the batter evenly in a greased and floured 9-by-13-inch cake pan. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for about 20 minutes, or until very light brown and slightly soft in the middle. Remove from the oven and cool the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Cut into bars (whatever size you wish). Cool completely in the pan before removing the bars with a spatula. The bars may be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days, then frozen for 1 month.
